Chester County’s Household Hazardous Waste event, scheduled for June 19 in Coatesville at the CCIU Learning Center, has been cancelled due to the Governor’s orders regarding Covid-19 restrictions. Residents should keep their unwanted household hazardous waste (such as oil paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, antifreeze, rechargeable batteries and other substances) until another event is announced. Check the Chester County Solid Waste Authority website https://www.chestercountyswa.org/ for updates and information.
During this time of changing behaviors, it can also be an opportune time to examine behaviors that help us reduce hazardous waste. There is a wealth of information on the Internet. For example:
- Is there a less harmful substitute I can use? (Cinnamon, garlic, hot peppers may work as pesticides)
- Can I purchase a smaller quantity? (Maybe 8 oz. will do for the area I am covering. Maybe the product comes in a concentrated form so I use less.)
- Can I use it up or give it to someone who can? (“Like new” cleaning products may be accepted by local animal shelters or non-profit agencies.)
- Can I collaborate with neighbors or family members to use it up? (Co-purchasing is sharing.)
